Are you the type to tell stories? Do you want to turn these stories into interesting texts for people to read? Human interest stories, as the name suggests, are stories crafted to pique curiosity within humans. Whether it’s about a controversial celeb story, or a cute viral dog moment, these stories are designed to bring interest and fun.
1. Look through a unique lens
Don’t choose the same story as everyone. You might have just started your story while the same story is already published. Nobody wants to hear the same story twice, instead opt to try a different approach. Find an angle that not many have seen before. An example of this is when I had to write a sports feature about a volleyball player and her performance during the game. When writing about athletes in team sports, MVPs are often in the limelight. With this, hundreds of articles are written about the same player of the same team during the same game. I, however, scanned other players and landed on the team’s backbone, their libero. My article then became a standout from others who wrote about the same event.
2. Start with a BANG!
Every single part of the article is important but do you know what catches the eyes of the audience? A catchy title and a bang of a lead. A start that sets the impression of the whole story—a creative lead, an interesting story. A lead that grabs the readers and make them read more (metaphorically of course). Begin with an intriguing question or a vivid description that grips curiosity. Remember that the start gets the whole story flowing
3. Show don’t just tell
An interesting story transports the readers into the world where the story takes place. Through imagery, the story becomes realer and exciting. Describe the whole scene in detail to paint a picture. Explain how the scenery looks, what each character involved is feeling, and how deep these emotions are. These help the reader put themselves in the character’s shoes.
4. Search then Research
Articles should always be factual, even in feature articles and human interest stories. Writers should find a balance between interesting imagery and the hard truths as to not misinform the readers. Trust me, you do NOT want to be the source of fake news.
So, what are you waiting for? Use this to guide you and make that human interest story. Remember that your words are important and should be heard!
